Multiplexer!

Sooooo.... We've been working on getting a Multiplexer going for our simulcasting over at our warehouse location and I am happy to say we are pretty much complete! still the odd thing i would like to see changed but those will have to wait till after Monday! (Big wigs are doing a walk through, so we are not allowed to make a mess)

For those who don't know... A simulcast for a cable company is when we substitute a Local (or regional) Network over top of a foreign network when they are showing the same content so you will see local commercials instead of the foreign ones, in this case Canadian content over American.

We moved from an older system stationed at our retail office [Pic 1] [Pic 2]

to a nice new fancy dancy system controlled by a not so old terminal :) but what makes it really nice is converting those 27 TVs (minus a few for other uses) to 24 combined on one 42" TV Screen. (Using six multiplexers, thirteen DCT 700s, ten DCT 2000HTs, one VCR, eight 120mm case fans, a lot of wires and cables, and an optional PC to connect to the multiplexers.) [Pic 3] [Pic 4] [Pic 5] [Pic 6]

Who wouldn't want that old terminal after being able to play with that new stuff hey? One thing we will have to work on is cooling the DCTs a little more, with the case fans going it isn't so bad. Still hot to the touch but is bearable :) compared to working on the wiring without the fans going (ouchie). And a strip of Electrical tap across the IR sensors to stop all the DCTs are receiving the remote control signals (Stupid DCT 700s not having buttons on the unit). The nice thing about the tape is holding the remote up close to the tap allows the IR to go through the tap to the DCT but does not bounce the signal backwards to be received by all the others.

So all and all it is fun to setup and use, I guess now we will have to make a documentation on how it all works and is setup for the others that were not involved in the creation of the heat spewing contraption.

  1. Where do you work? That cabinet looks hellah.

  2. Recently as of Dec I am a HFC Network Analyst for Shaw Cablesystems. (The Operations Centre for Vancouver Island)

The Big thing now is noise (I don’t find it that bad and Heat that is pumping out from all the DCTs)
